Rogers to provide wireless connection for Hydro-Quebec's new smart meter program

By The Canadian Press  | June 17, 2011

MONTREAL - Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI.B) says it has hooked up with Hydro-Quebec to provide the public utility with wireless connectivity for its new "smart" meter program.

The Toronto-based cellphone and media company said it won a six-year agreement to provide wireless connections between Hydro-Quebec's central system and data from 3.8 million smart meters that will pass through 600 collectors.

No value for the contract was provided.

Rogers is teaming up with Xplorenet Communications Inc. to ensure satellite connectivity in remote parts of Quebec.

A trial deployment begins this month.

Hydro-Quebec plans to deploy the meters across the province by 2017, following several pilot projects.

It recently announced a deal with global giant Landis+Gyr to purchase an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and about three million next-generation meters.

Once the network is in place, it will transmit power outages and electricity use by customers.
