HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Redstone Arsenal managers say they are still developing plans in response to the Army's announcement it will cut more than 8,700 from its civilian work force by Sept. 30, 2012. But they aren't expecting massive layoffs.
The Huntsville Times reports (http://bit.ly/o08jzz ) that about 272 positions at the Aviation and Missile Command and 74 at Army Materiel Command headquarters at the arsenal are expected to be eliminated. Some AMCOM employees applied for Voluntary Early Retirement/Voluntary Separation Incentive pay before a July 15 deadline.
AMC moved more than 1,300 positions to Redstone Arsenal and opened a new headquarters there in June. It oversees 11 subordinate commands and two separately reporting agencies worldwide, with more than 70,000 employees.
