By AP  | September 16, 2011

WILLIAMSBURG, Mich. (AP) — Kurt Ziebart, inventor of the Ziebart Rust-Proofing process has died at age 91.

His wife says Ziebart died Monday at his home in Williamsburg, about 10 miles east of Traverse City in northern Michigan.

Ziebart was born in Kiesslingswalde, Germany, now part of Poland. He became a certified master auto mechanic and ran a repair business in Germany before he and wife Edith immigrated to America in 1953.

Edith Ziebart tells The Associated Press that visitors from Germany commented on how rusted-out American cars were, prompting her husband to develop and patent the rust-proofing process.

Kurt Ziebart founded the business in 1961, selling what became Ziebart International Corp. in 1963. The Troy-based company now has 400 outlets in 30 countries. He later started a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Grand Traverse County.
