TORONTO - Cineplex Entertainment (TSX:CGX) says it plans to build a new movie theatre in the south end of Guelph, a city in southwestern Ontario.

The 1,600-seat theatre in the Pergola Commons development at Gordon Street and Clair Road, will open in 2012, the Toronto company said Tuesday.

Cineplex opened its first theatre in the city in 2004.

Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Cineplex , said "the tremendous growth and expansion" in the south end of the city prompted the company to open another Guelph location.

Cineplex is the largest movie theatre company in Canada, with 130 theatres from British Columbia to Quebec.

The company has about 10,000 employees and operates through well-known brands such as Cineplex Odeon, Galaxy, Famous Players, Colossus, Coliseum, SilverCity, Cinema City and Scotiabank Theatres.
