MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Mason City Council has accepted Alliant Energy's commitment to build an operations center in the city and has approved a 25-year franchise agreement with Alliant.
The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/rABLQ6 ) that the city and Alliant had been negotiating for about 18 months. Key points were the length of the agreement and when Alliant would build the operations center.
The agreement unanimously approved Tuesday by the council gives the city the right to review and possibly cancel the agreement after 10, 15 or 20 years.
Alliant Energy agreed to build the multimillion-dollar operations center within the next five years. If it doesn't, the city could cancel the franchise agreement.
