GE unit to open new Pa. plant, add up to 150 jobs

GROVE CITY, Pa. (AP) — General Electric Co.'s transportation unit has announced plans to spend about $72 million to build a diesel engine plant and upgrade an existing plant in western Pennsylvania, bringing up to 150 more jobs to the area by early 2013.

GE Transportation said Tuesday that it will spend $35 million on the new Grove City plant and $37 million on the existing plant a few miles away.

The manufacturer of rail, mining and transportation-related products says the new facility will employ up to 250 employees, with about 100 current employees transferring there and about 150 more to be hired.

GE Transportation says it expects demand for remanufacturing services to increase significantly due to routine locomotive overhaul cycles and the need to comply with stricter environmental emission standards for diesel engines.
