Uniboard USA to sell North Carolina plants to subsidiary of Chilean company

By The Canadian Press  | December 29, 2011

MONCURE, N.C. - Uniboard USA LLC, a sister company to Uniboard Canada Inc., has struck a deal to sell plants in North Carolina to a Chilean company for an undisclosed price.

The forestry company said Thursday it will sell its medium density fibreboard and particleboard plants in Moncure, N.C. to a subsidiary of Chilean company Paneles Arauco S.A.

Fibreboard and particleboard are heavily used in the furniture industry but also have other applications.

Arauco says it will license the Uniboard melamine brand — used in countertops, plastics and other products — for sales in the U.S. southeast market, the area the acquired plants service.

Uniboard Canada will continue to supply the Canadian and U.S. markets with those materials as well as laminate flooring from its Quebec mills in Sayabec, Val d'Or, Mont Laurier and Laval.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2012.

Uniboard USA LLC and Uniboard Canada are subsidiaries of Pfleiderer AG, a German company that makes engineered wood products.
