Fortress Paper ramps up production at its cellulose mill in Quebec to 60%

VANCOUVER - Production of dissolving pulp at the specialty mill owned by Fortress Paper Ltd. (TSX:FTP) in Thurso, Que., has reached 60 per cent of its targeted capacity and customer shipments have begun, the company said Monday.

"The ramp up of production continues substantially as planned and we expect meaningful improvements in the short term followed by smaller productivity gains as we approach our targeted production capacity," Fortress said in a release.

The company said its dissolving pulp operation in Thurso, which began production in early December, was meeting customer specifications and that shipments began in the final week of December.

"We are extremely pleased with the speed at which the ramp up of dissolving production is proceeding," said chief executive Chad Wasilenkoff.

"With the shipment of our first orders, we have demonstrated our ability to successfully produce dissolving pulp that meets the stringent specifications of our customers."

Fortress Paper operates internationally in three distinct business segments: dissolving pulp, specialty papers and security paper products.

The specialty cellulose mill is also in the process of expanding into the renewable energy generation sector with the construction of a cogeneration facility

Fortress also operates a specialty papers business in Germany, while its security paper products are made at a mill in Switzerland and optically variable thin film material at another plant in Canada.
