January auto sales: Volkswagen

HERNDON, Va. (AP) — Volkswagen of America Inc. said Wednesday its January U.S. sales jumped 47.9 percent on strong demand for the redesigned version of its Passat sedan.

BY THE NUMBERS: Volkswagen sold 27,209 vehicles in January, up from 18,401 in the same month last year.

TOP SELLER: Sales of Jetta sedans and wagons fell 4.3 percent to 10,962 from 11,460, but still was easily the automaker's top selling model.

HOT MODELS: The automaker sold 6,318 of its new Passat, up from just 108 in the same month last year. Demand for the GTI increased 27 percent to 1,231 and Golf sales rose 18.6 percent to 1,227.

Sales of diesel vehicles rose 30.2 percent and accounted for 17.6 percent of the automaker's sales.
