Key revenue figure rises 7.4 pct at Buckle in Jan.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — The Buckle Inc. said Thursday that its sales at stores open at least a year rose 7.4 percent in January on strong sales of jeans shoes and other casual apparel.

Analysts, on average, were expecting the teen clothing chain to report an increase of 7.3 percent, according to a Thomson Reuters survey.

Revenue from stores open at least one year is a key indicator of a retailer's health, because it measures growth at existing locations rather than from stores recently opened or closed.

For the four weeks that ended Jan. 28, total revenue rose 10.9 percent to $60.3 million from $54.4 million. Denim and footwear were both strong sellers for men and women, the company said.

For the fiscal fourth quarter that ended on the same day, revenue at stores open at least a year rose 8 percent, while total revenue increased 11.2 percent to $337.1 million.

For the full fiscal year, revenue at stores open at least a year increased 8.4 percent and total revenue rose 11.9 percent to $1.06 billion from $959.8 million.

The Buckle, based in Kearney, Neb., operates 431 stores in 43 states.
