Thousands seek jobs at Ind. locomotive factory

By AP  | February 05, 2012

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — The turnout of an estimated 3,000 people prompted a company opening a locomotive factory in Muncie to end its job fair early.

Several of those would-be employees tell The Star Press (http://tspne.ws/zDZfnv ) that they were encouraged to turn out for Saturday's job fair after Progress Rail announced Friday it would close its factory in London, Ontario.

Workers there have been locked out since Jan. 1 after refusing to take 50 percent cuts to wages of $30 an hour or more. The jobs advertised in Muncie range from $12.50 to $18.50 an hour.

Terry Murphy of the Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance says the company will have another job fair. The Muncie area has had about 10 percent unemployment for months.
