MARION, Iowa (AP) — The city of Marion is in a position to want the trash of other nearby cities so it can meet the requirements of a proposed plant that will turn garbage into energy.
Marion is working on an agreement with Plasma Power LLC, which wants to build a $170 million facility that converts trash into gas to feed power plants.
The Gazette in Cedar Rapids (http://bit.ly/yHNw0O ) says Marion Public Works Director Ryan Miller told the city council Tuesday that the city doesn't make enough garbage. The plant would require about 250 tons a day but Marion only generates about 100 tons.
Plasma Power's contract currently would expect Marion to pay a $1.5 million a year if it failed to provide enough garbage. The city continues negotiations on the contact.
