OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says wholesale trade rose 0.9 per cent in December to $49.6 billion, the seventh increase in the last eight months of the year.

The agency says the increase came amid higher sales of motor vehicles and parts and in food, beverage and tobacco products.

In volume terms, wholesale sales were up 1.3 per cent in December.

Sales were up in four of seven subsectors, representing 71 per cent of wholesale trade.

The biggest gain of 3.4 per cent came in the motor vehicle and parts subsector, with sales hitting $8.4 billion, the highest level since March 2007.

Sales rose in six provinces in December, with Ontario and Quebec wholesalers contributing the most in dollar terms to the national increase.
