Overview
Welcome to our 12th annual ranking of Canada's 500 largest publicly traded companies. Another tumultuous year in the markets has passed, highlighted by a weak global recovery that is still being dragged down by ailing economies such as those of Portugal and Greece. The uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa have caused a spike in the price of oil, and the value of precious metals continues to gain ground. Japan, already dealing with an underperforming economy, was devastated by an earthquake, a tsunami and the aftermath of a near-nuclear meltdown. In Canada, we suddenly find a transformed political landscape that must soon grapple with foreign ownership questions, continued weak employment and a troubled manufacturing sector.
Our investment package helps guide you through the chaos. Michael McCullough breaks down the deflation vs. inflation debate. Rachel Mendleson goes to a West Texas silver mining town pining its future on the continued high price of the silver. Matthew McClearn investigates the rising cost of farmland and wonders whether this is the next investment bubble. Tom Watson looks at high-frequency trading systems and Joe Castaldo looks at the downfall of stocks analysts.
As well, we have the Investor 500 interactive list of stocks and a breakout of the best stocks for dividends, growth value and more.
The Investor 500 data was compiled by Phil Froats using statistics from Bloomberg.
