WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says his administration’s new rules to curb greenhouse gases from power plants are essential to protect the health and wellbeing of children.
Obama is working to head off opposition to the rules in his weekly radio and Internet address. Critics say the emissions rules the Obama administration is bringing forward Monday will increase costs, kill jobs and damage the economy.
Obama says he won’t condemn children to a planet beyond fixing. He says there doesn’t have to be a choice between the economy and children’s health.
Obama says when U.S. businesses are asked to innovate, they do it.
In the Republican address, Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi says Republicans don’t want regulations that make little difference and increase costs.
