China investigating Qualcomm, InterDigital under anti-monopoly law

BEIJING, China – A Chinese government agency says it is investigating U.S. technology companies Qualcomm and InterDigital in separate cases for possible violations of the country’s anti-monopoly law.

An official of the Cabinet’s planning agency said Wednesday it was investigating complaints the companies, which develop mobile phone and wireless technology, abused their dominant market positions and charged excessive fees for patent rights.

A government spokesman said regulators are considering a proposal by InterDigital to end the investigation of the company in exchange for making changes in its business practices.

The spokesman said the investigation of Qualcomm still was underway.

China is a major producer of mobile phones and other electronics and the communist government is frustrated that its manufacturers pay billions of dollars in fees to use foreign technology.
