STATESBORO, Ga. – A former Georgia banker accused of stealing millions from investors before vanishing for 18 months has pleaded not guilty to bank fraud charges and agreed to remain jailed pending trial.
A court-appointed attorney for 47-year-old Aubrey Lee Price entered the plea Wednesday before a federal magistrate judge in Statesboro.
Judge G.R. Smith said Price made a showing that he had no money to hire his own lawyer. He is charged with misspending, embezzling and losing $21 million.
Price didn’t speak during the brief hearing. Duston Tapley Jr. is a lawyer and family friend who has agreed to assist with Price’s case, and he called Price a hard-working, good guy.
Price had been missing since June 2012 when he was arrested last week during a traffic stop in south Georgia.
