How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Monday

The Dow Jones industrial average logged its longest winning streak in six months as a big week for corporate earnings began. The index rose for a fifth straight day on Monday, its longest winning streak since October.

Halliburton, an oil and gas drilling company, rose after reporting a first-quarter profit on rising revenue in the Middle East and Asia. Toymaker Hasbro gained after it said it returned to profitability in its first quarter, driven by sales of girls’ toys such as My Little Pony and Nerf Rebelle.

On Monday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 40.71 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 16,449.25.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 7.04 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 1,871.89.

The Nasdaq composite added 26.03 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 4,121.55.

For the year:

The Dow is down 127.41 points, or 0.8 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 23.53 points, or 1.3 per cent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 55.04 points, or 1.3 per cent.

  1. I love getting the letters, but please don’t go telling folks they are heading to get about one particular a week. We have been lucky to obtain a single a month. You need to do a little better than that….or halt the pinocchio stories at the quite least. If just one a month is what it is, then that’s what it is.

  2. Do you know how I avoid duplicate iCal alerts? (Apple support does not, so far…) I think b/c of iCloud calendar sharing involving my husband and that i, I am getting two alerts for every event on the iMac and on the iPhone. everything is up to date and i have a very new MacBook Pro and the new iPhone 4s.
