How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Monday

U.S. stocks ended little changed as traders waited for key economic and earnings reports later this week. A handful of mergers drove some trading in an otherwise quiet day. Family Dollar soared 25 per cent after Dollar Tree announced plans to buy the rival discount store.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 22.02 points, or 0.1 per cent, to close at 16,982.59.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 0.57 of a point, less than 0.1 per cent, to 1,978.91.

The Nasdaq composite fell 4.65 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4,444.91.

For the year:

The Dow is up 405.93 points, or 2.5 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 130.55 points, or 7.1 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 268.32 points, or 6.4 per cent.
