How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Thursday

 

Better corporate earnings helped nudge the stock market higher on Thursday in one of the quietest sessions this year. Health-care companies led the major indexes to slight gains, while Berkshire Hathaway crossed another milestone, trading above $200,000 a share for the first time.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 61.78 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 16,713.58.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 8.46 points, or 0.4 per cent, to close at 1,955.18.

The Nasdaq composite rose 18.88 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,453.00.

For the week:

The Dow is up 159.65 points, or 1 per cent.

The S&P 500 is up 23.59 points, or 1.2 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 82.10 points, or 1.9 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 136.92 points, or 0.8 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 106.82 points, or 5.8 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 276.41 points, or 6.6 per cent.
