TORONTO – BlackBerry still had a 19 per cent share of the Canadian smartphone market as of June but that number has been declining, says measurement company comScore.
Google’s Android platform had 43 per cent of the market, Apple’s iOS had 35 per cent and Microsoft’s mobile operating system had two per cent, according to comScore.
“When we first started measuring mobile a couple of years back what we saw was that at the end of the day, the BlackBerry share was close to 40 per cent,” said vice president of sales Bryan Segal at a Social Media Week event on Monday.
“Definitely share is changing. BlackBerry in Canada is still a stronghold, we measure this across the globe and this is the highest percentage of BlackBerry usage.
“I’m not a forecaster … but obviously the trend is going down.”
ComScore said there are now 23 million mobile phone users in Canada, with 72 per cent on a smartphone and 28 per cent still using an older so-called feature phone.
About 61 per cent of Canadians had a smartphone in June, which was third highest globally. About 66 per cent of U.S. consumers and 62 per cent of U.K. mobile users had smartphones.
ComScore has often reported that Canada leads the world in Internet usage and that’s still the case in a few — but not all — categories.
Canadians are tops in the rankings for most web pages viewed per month and the number of monthly visits to websites. Canada’s 28 million users are second in time spent online at an average of 41.3 hours per month, behind American users who are online an average of 43 hours monthly.
Canadians were also second worldwide in terms of viewing videos online.
“The average Canadian watches about 25 hours per month of video, that’s all types of video: short form, long form, porn form,” said Segal.
He also said Canadian users watch 300 videos per month on average.
