Weston Foods buys rye bread maker Rubschlager Baking Corp. in Chicago

TORONTO – A subsidiary of George Weston Ltd. (TSX:WN) said Monday that it has bought Rubschlager Baking Corp., a maker of rye breads in Chicago.

Financial terms of the deal for the 100-year-old bakery were not immediately available.

Rubschlager’s breads are sold across the United States and Canada and include deli-style cocktail and square breads.

The company also makes Northern European-style Rye-Ola breads with whole rye and whole grains.

“Rubschlager will bring world-class, authentic rye products and capabilities to complement Weston’s broad portfolio of bakery products,” said Kevin McDonough, president of Weston Foods’ frozen division.

“We plan to offer these great rye products to our customers in Canada and the U.S. through our existing sales network.”
