OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says wholesale sales rose 0.6 per cent to $53 billion in June, a third consecutive increase.

The agency says gains in five subsectors more than offset a drop in the motor vehicle and parts subsector.

Economists had expected a gain of 0.4 per cent, according to Thomson Reuters.

Excluding the motor vehicle and parts subsector, which fell 2.4 per cent, wholesale sales rose 1.2 per cent.

Among those posting gains, the miscellaneous subsector was up 3.1 per cent while the building material and supplies subsector was up 2.2 per cent and the machinery, equipment and supplies group gained 0.4 per cent.

Sales increased in the food, beverage and tobacco subsector by 1.5 per cent and the farm product subsector rose 1.4 per cent. Personal and household goods slipped 0.7 per cent.

In volume terms, wholesale sales were up 0.7 per cent.
