THE CONFLICT: In 1999, Welsh soprano Charlotte Church (then 13) sang at Murdoch’s wedding to Wendi Deng in New York. She claims she was offered either £100,000 or the promise of good coverage in Murdoch-owned publications. She chose the latter, but to no avail; British tabloids published extensive accounts of her relationships, body weight, sartorial choices and much else besides.
THE OUTCOME: Church testified she’d learned from police that her phone messages (along with those of friends, family and romantic partners) were intercepted by an investigator working for Murdoch’s News of the World. In December, at the U.K.’s High Court of Justice Queen’s Bench, Church and her parents sued News International and its P.I. News International has said little about the lawsuit but has denied it offered favourable coverage to Church in 1999.
