Marketing Maverick: Unionmade not union made

Pricey store’s handle rings up trouble.

The idea: In 2009, San Francisco
men’s boutique Unionmade began
selling clothing such as $258
“vintage-styled work shirts” and
$565 vintage Levi’s jeans, using
a logo similar to that of the labour
giant AFL-CIO.

The reaction: Union supporters were dismayed to learn the products on offer are not, as a rule, made by unionized labour. The AFL-CIO has filed a letter demanding the store stop using the “highly misleading” name and infringing on its trademarked logo.
