K. von Finckenstein

After five years as the head of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, von Finckenstein is being shown the door. Reportedly seeking an extension to his contract initially, von Finckenstein sent a memo to his staff in late September saying the federal government will begin searching for his replacement. His term ends in January 2012.
Von Finckenstein’s time at the CRTC was controversial, and he frequently butted heads with the Conservatives in government. That helps to explain why the feds aren’t keeping him around longer than necessary.
Earlier this year, von Finckenstein allowed the big telecom companies to enforce data caps on smaller wholesale Internet providers, known as usage-based billing. Consumers protested, and the federal government took note. Then–industry minister Tony Clement issued a decree by Twitter, instructing the CRTC to “go back to [the] drawing board.”
Wind Mobile was another flashpoint. In October 2009, the CRTC ruled the investment structure of the new wireless carrier wasn’t sufficiently Canadian, only to have the government overturn the ruling. The matter is now before the Supreme Court.
The outgoing chair was also known for his acerbic style, once telling witnesses during the UBB hearings, “I’m tired of being misled by you guys not answering my questions.”
