Gerald Schwartz School of Business at St. Francis Xavier University
Renamed: November 2010
Despite being located in a small town in a small province, St. Francis Xavier University has had a huge impact across Canada. The institution’s alumni include former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna, current Conservative cabinet minister Lisa Raitt, and former Home Depot Canada president Annette Verschuren. With their distinctive X-rings and surprisingly strong school spirit, St. FX alumni are the closest thing this country has to a powerful secret society.
But one of the most generous contributors to St. FX didn’t even go there—University of Manitoba alum and Onex CEO Gerald Schwartz has donated millions to the Antigonish school. What better recognition of Schwartz’s stellar corporate career than to have a business school named after him?
“I am personally interested in more than just business schools,” Schwartz told The Globe and Mail in 2010. “However, life has been good to me and it's been good to me through a business career. I think the chance to help strengthen the foundation of young people going into business, as I did, just appeals to me."
St. FX is not the only beneficiary of Schwartz and wife Heather Reisman’s largesse. The couple’s charitable commitments include Mount Sinai Hospital, the University of Ottawa, the Heseg Foundation and the United Jewish Appeal of Greater Toronto.
