Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary
Renamed: November 2013
Donation: $25 million
Nothing is as vital to Canada’s future as training the next generation, but many educational philanthropists direct their giving at the b-schools and science centres that churn out managers and engineers. Oilfield baron David Werklund aimed his sights lower on the age spectrum, making the largest ever donation to a Canadian education faculty in late 2013.
“Through the Werklund School of Education, I would like to see teachers given tools to help them truly connect with their students,” said Werklund. "Teachers have a responsibility as leaders to create an environment and culture where young people feel valued. When it comes to student development and creating this culture of acceptance, I believe the University of Calgary is really making headway."
The school is already weighing in on important conversations about education, like whether multigrade classrooms enhance learning. Youth leadership is another key cause for the billionaire, with the Werklund Foundation Centre for Youth Leadership another example of his collaboration with U of C.
