J.R. Shaw School of Business at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology
Renamed: May 2007
Some Edmontonians still haven’t forgiven J.R. Shaw for moving his cable company from their city to Calgary in 1995, citing better business opportunities and supposedly leaving with this caustic suggestion: “Get one airport.”
That didn’t stop the Edmonton-based Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) from acknowledging the telecom giant’s contributions to the province, however. Although Shaw had no involvement with the school, having attended Michigan State University, NAIT renamed its business school after him in 2007. “At some schools, sometimes when you give a big donation, you get your name on a building," a touched Shaw told the Edmonton Journal. "That's not the case here. This isn't because of any (financial) contribution."
