OTTAWA, Nov. 5 /CNW Telbec/ - To mark Remembrance Day this year, specialty channel Discovery Civilization will air two films from The War Amps internationally award-winning Military Heritage Documentary Series, beginning at 8:00 pm on November 11, 2009.

Jeff Nicklin: Hero of the Gridiron and the Battlefield (30 minutes) contains seldom-seen football footage of the 1930s and rare wartime images, as well as an interview with War Amps CEO Cliff Chadderton, who talks about his friend Jeff Nicklin.

Part of the Blue Bombers Grey Cup victories in 1935 and '39, Nicklin enlisted with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He transferred to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, eventually becoming Commanding Officer. One of the first to land on D-Day, he earned a Mention in Despatches, a military award for gallantry. He was killed while leading his paratroopers on the drop into the Rhineland on March 24, 1945. After the war, the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion Association created the Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy, awarded annually by the Canadian Football League to the West's most outstanding player. Sixty years later, the Association, The War Amps and the CFL had the trophy re-dedicated.

Watch and Warn: Canada's Home Front Aircraft Detection Corps tells how ordinary Canadians answered their country's urgent call for help and volunteered to watch for enemy saboteurs on the home front in World War II.

Based on the book Watch and Warn by Allan Coggon, it's an untold story about how housewives, school children, fishermen and lighthouse keepers became official observers for the Aircraft Detection Corps (RCAF). Their job was to scan the skies and seas and report any suspicious sightings of aircraft and vessels - even spies.

Like all War Amps productions, these were funded by corporate donations and have been distributed to regular, specialty and community channels across Canada. They can be purchased at a cost-recovery price by calling toll-free 1 800 250-3030, faxing toll-free 1 800 219-8988 or visiting www.waramps.ca.
