The conference is co-hosted by the Rotary International District 7070 Microfinance Committee, Rotarian Action Group for Microcredit, FINCA International, ACCESS Community Capital Fund, Grameen Foundation, Oikocredit, Opportunity International and Foundation for Women; and is sponsored by Crann Law Firm and Scotiabank.
The conference brings together 12 domestic and international organizations active in developing microfinance programs directed at the poor and unbanked. Microfinance is one of the most effective ways to help the poor find a dignified route out of poverty.
"If Rotary can play an important part in ending the world's scourge of polio it can do major work in overcoming poverty" says Steve Rickard, President, Rotarian Action Group for Microcredit. "Most agree that microcredit is the single best anti-poverty tool known to mankind. With 130 million borrowers and on average five dependents per borrower, microcredit is providing a major push to meet the millennium goals of cutting in half the world's poverty by 2015".
"It is not OK that more than half our human family lives in dire poverty - more than 3 billion people" says Deborah Lindholm, Founder & CEO, Foundation for Women. "The Foundation for Women is committed to eliminating global poverty through microcredit locally and globally. We operate innovative and pioneering programs in Liberia and San Diego".
The conference is open to the public. Attendees will have a unique opportunity to learn more about how microfinance institutions operate in different regions of the world and how to become involved.
The conference will include workshops on microfinance programs delivered by microfinance institutions that operate in North America, Latin America, Africa and Asia.
