(AP) - Among the earnings stories for Thursday, Oct. 29, from AP Financial News:

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — Callaway Golf Co. said its third-quarter loss grew year-over-year as consumers continued to refrain from spending on leisure activities.

HOUSTON (AP) — BMC Software Inc. said its fiscal second-quarter earnings jumped 35 percent, as falling expenses offset a slight decline in sales.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Casino operator Las Vegas Sands Corp. said it lost more in the third quarter this year than last as gambling markets continued struggling and the company pressed ahead on developing a resort in Singapore.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — McAfee Inc. said third-quarter profit fell by 25 percent as higher costs and charges ate away at a revenue increase.

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — Human Genome Sciences Inc. said it booked a smaller loss in the third quarter because research and development spending dropped sharply.

PORTLAND (AP) — Portland General Electric Co. reported a profit for its third quarter compared with a year-ago period in which a refund to customers wiped out the utility's earnings.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Managed care company Aetna Inc. heads into the final quarter of 2009 fighting swine flu and rising unemployment like the other major health insurers.

NEW YORK (AP) — Monster Worldwide Inc., which operates the job search site Monster.com, said its third-quarter earnings fell 23 percent — evidence employers were still nervous to hire.

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil companies have begun to pump more petroleum and bring in more profits as they recover from an otherwise miserable year. None of the world's biggest producers, however, see a quick return to boom times of last year.
