Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (11,025.9 up 147.55 points):

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Gold miner. Up 89 cents or 7.64 per cent at $12.54 on volume of 10,417,567 shares. The gold sector was ahead 6.43 per cent as the December bullion contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange surged $30.90 to US$1,084.90 an ounce on a day when the International Monetary Fund said it sold 200 metric tons of gold to the Reserve Bank of India

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Trains and planes. Up 23 cents or 5.29 per cent at $4.58 on volume of 8,893,865 shares.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Gold miner. Down 40 cents or 2.02 per cent at $19.36. The company cited problems at its Paracatu mine in Brazil among other things for posting a third-quarter loss of $21.5 million and for lowering its production guidance for the year.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Gold miner. Up $2.58 or 6.55 per cent at $41.97 on volume of 7,326,668 shares.

Mediterranean Resources Ltd. (TSX:MNR). Exploration and development. Down two cents of 11.11 per cent at 12 cents on volume of 7,181,500 shares.

Nuvo Research Inc. (TSX:NRI). Pharmaceutical. Down four cents or 11.76 per cent at 30 cents on volume of 7,122,418 shares. Shares have traded heavily as the Mississauga, Ont.,-based company awaits a ruling, perhaps within days, from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Pennsaid, its new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,326.75 up 37.13 points):

Romarco Minerals Inc. (TSXV:R). Exploration. Up 10 cents or 8.33 per cent at $1.30 on volume of 6,666,225 shares.

Mart Resources Inc. (TSXV:MMT). Oil and gas. Up three cents or 37.5 per cent at 11 cents on volume of 5,557,500 shares. The Calgary-based company announced Monday it was terminating a takeover by Westfield Oil Holding Ltd. and that it had repaid the outstanding principal amount of a US$3.5-million convertible bridge loan it received in late May and early June 2009.
