Average duration of unemployment<div class="caption"> <p><span style="font-size: 18px;"><strong>Average duration of unemployment</strong></span></p> <p><strong>What it measures:</strong> The average number of weeks unemployed Canadians have been looking for work.</p> <p> <strong>Where to find it: </strong>Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey. The data are downloadable from its website for a nominal fee. Published monthly.</p> <p> <strong>How to interpret it:</strong> One of the worst aspects of a recession is lost jobs, so much attention is rightly paid to the official unemployment rate. But CIBC economist Benjamin Tal says that figure often misleads when considered in isolation. “It’s very different if 80% of those unemployed have been so less than one month, or 80% are more than six months,” says Tal.</p> <p> <strong>Recent activity:</strong> Before the recession hit in 2008, it was below 15 weeks, whereas for most of this year it’s been above 20 weeks.</p> </div>
