There has been an explosion of home improvement stores over the last 10 years. Approximate 2010 sales for Home Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes and RONA totaled about $16 billion. In the last 10 years, Home Depot, Lowes and RONA have increased their presence from 458 to 1,159 stores. Some of the RONA increase was through acquisitions while that of Home Depot and Lowes was through new stores exclusively. Home Hardware currently has almost 1,100 outlets, but growth is hard to measure as it is a private company. The chart below shows growth in square footage, one of the standard measurements in the retail trade. As can be seen, both Home Depot and RONA have more than doubled their square footage and Lowes has gone from having no presence in Canada to more than 2.7 million square feet.
