Just a quick note before catching a shuttle to the airport for a flight to Chongqing. I ran into New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham in the hotel caf and he mentioned that a meeting between the premiers and the Minister of Foreign Affairs that was supposed to be 45 minutes went on for an hour and a half. When asked what they discussed, he said that it was a wide-ranging conversation.
“Were human rights discussed?”
“Yes, they were.”
This reiterates some of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s comments in a press conference yesterday, that they have been discussed. Just not publicly, not through the press. This is the manner in which the Chinese prefer to have the issues raised, in a friendly, quiet meeting behind closed doors.
