During a 1997 interview with John Templeton, Charlie Rose asked the legendary investor why he gave up investing in 1992 to pursue spiritual interests and philanthropy.
- I got smart, replied Templeton. All my life, I was helping people to get wealthy. I never noticed they became any happier.
But I wanted to help them become happier. Real wealth is not to be found in money but in spiritual growth. I wanted to grow myself spiritually and help other people to grow too.
It’s more blessed to give than to receive. Getting money makes people happy temporarily. Helping people gives you permanent joy. Lasting happiness comes not from getting but giving.
