POTENTIALLY NSFW, DEFINITELY USE EARPHONES
Las Vegas casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson has said that his donation to Republican Mitt Romney’s campaign for president will be “limitless” and could top $100 million. That’s a treasure chest of commitment to a chosen candidate.
Comedian Sarah Silverman has a similar level of devotion to President Obama. In exchange for Adelson switching allegiances, she’s offered to engage the 78-year-old billionaire in some sexy scissoring. And just in case Sheldon (or you) don’t know what that is, she helpfully performs a demonstration with a seemingly 78-year-old dog.Viewers are then asked to sign a petition at ScissorSheldon.com.
This isn’t Silverman’s first foray into the political ad arena. Back in 2008, she teamed with ad agency Droga5 and the Jewish Council for Education and Research to create “The Great Schlep,” to encourage younger Jewish voters to promote the Democratic candidate to their Floridian parents and grandparents. That effort won a handful of awards at the 2009 Cannes Lions Advertising Festival (adland’s Oscars).
In an age of increased attack ads on both sides of the border, the raunchy comedy angle is a refreshing approach, particularly for demographics filled with Daily Show devotees and Colbert Nation. Whether a good old fashioned scissoring is enough to persuade Mr. Adelson or not, Silverman’s latest ad adventure certainly has got the attention of everyone else.
