The best airports in the world

Vancouver the best in North America.

The earliest days of commercial air travel were civilized affairs. People looked forward to getting on a plane; they even dressed for the occasion.

Not anymore. Long lines, endless delays, layers of security and overpriced food have tarnished the experience and have transformed some airports into glorified into bus terminals. But travelers might be happy to learn some airports have been bucking the trend, although only one airport in all of North America makes this top 10 list.

According to the latest Skytrax World Airport Awards, Vancouver is the best airport on the continent and the eighth best in the world. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the YVR has been ranked the top airport in North America. Cracking the top ten is no small feat. The annual awards are based on 12 million passenger surveys conducted at airports all around the world. The survey measures 39 different factors, including comfort, efficiency, signage, airport access, passenger amenities and friendliness.

According to Skytrax, Vancouver International Airport offers “passengers a good all-round experience and scores well for both staff service and terminal ambience.”

Skytrax ranks almost 400 airports around the world, but only three other Canadian airports cracked the top 100. Toronto’s Pearson International Airport was the next highest rated airport in Canada at 46, up one spot from last year.

The other Canadian airports to make the top 100 include Halifax’s Stanfield International Airport at 58, up 10 places from last year, and Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau Intl Airport which fell five spots to 83 overall.

If you want to experience some of the best airports in the world be prepared for a long flight. Five of the top 10 airports are found in Asia and the remaining four are all in Europe.

Singapore Changi Airport takes over the top spot overall, pushing last year’s winner, Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, into the second place.

Sadly, none of the Canadian airports got a nod from Skytrax in any of the main categories they follow. For those who like to kill time between connections, doing some shopping at Heathrow is your best bet. If you’re looking to grab a decent meal before you takeoff Skytrax suggests you plan your connections through Munich.

But if you’re looking for more then try to plan a stop at Singapore, which, according to Skytrax, has the best leisure amenities. It comes complete with nature trails, a swimming pool, a live music lounge and free areas where you can grab a nap.

Now that’s civilized.
