It’s just an image of text, but it quickly went viral. Two weeks ago, it topped page one on reddit and it’s been bouncing around social media sites ever since.
The concept is simple enough: Imagine the U.S. budget was instead that of your household. You’ll have to knock off a few zeroes, but doing so makes clear just how far from parity the deficit is—and also how little the cuts made in August accomplished. Little in terms of deficit reduction, anyhow; there’s something to be said for avoiding a default.
I can’t seem to find the original reddit post anymore—just links to the image—which is too bad, because I’d like to give credit where credit is due.
