NEWTON, Mass. – Boston College is renaming its College of Arts and Sciences after its largest benefactor, a 1960 graduate of the Jesuit university.
The university announced Thursday that the school will be called the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences in honour of Robert J. Morrissey.
The school says with his latest gift, the attorney becomes the largest benefactor in school history. The size of the gift was not disclosed.
Morrissey served as a trustee from 1980 to 2014, and chaired the Committee on Investment and Endowment. His investment acumen played a decisive role in the growth of Boston College’s endowment over the past 35 years from $18 million to more than $2.2 billion.
The college has almost 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 450 full- and part-time faculty within 22 academic departments.
