Court fines Potash Corp in death of miner struck on head by falling earth

SASKATOON – Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. (TSX:POT) has been fined $280,000 for workplace violations in the death of a worker.

The man was killed when he was struck on the head by falling earth at the company’s Cory mine near Saskatoon in February 2014.

Co-workers tried to resuscitate the 31-year-old but he later died in hospital.

Another worker was also taken to hospital, but was not seriously injured.

The company pleaded guilty to failing to take effective steps to control the movement of strata in underground evacuations, an offence under the province’s mining regulations.
