U.S. stock indexes closed sharply higher on Monday following encouraging news on consumer spending and home sales. Energy stocks and banks notched some of the biggest gains. The latest round of corporate deals also helped lift the market.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 263.65 points, or 1.5 per cent, to 17,976.31.
The S&P 500 index added 25.22 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 2,086.24.
The Nasdaq composite rose 56.22 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 4,947.44.
For the year:
The Dow is up 153.24 points, or 0.9 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 27.34 points, or 1.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 211.39 points, or 4.5 per cent.
