U.S. stocks closed higher Monday, led by gains in energy shares as the price of crude oil surged. Volume was relatively light. Many overseas markets were closed for holidays.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 117.61 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 17,880.85.
The S&P 500 index gained 13.66 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 2,080.62.
The Nasdaq composite added 30.38 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 4,917.32.
For the year:
The Dow is up 57.78 points, or 0.3 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 21.72 points, or 1.1 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 181.26 points, or 3.8 per cent.
