After an indecisive day, stocks turned around in the last minutes of trading Monday and managed to end with modest gains. Last week’s drop was the worst for the market since mid-August, but stocks rose over the last hour of trading and finished at their highest levels of the day.
The Dow Jones industrial average picked up 103.29 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 17,358.50.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 9.57 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 2,021.94.
The Nasdaq composite index added 18.76 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,952.23.

The Dow is down 454.57 points, or 2.6 per cent.
The S&P is down 36.96 points, or 1.8 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 216.17 points, or 4.6 per cent.
