Stocks skidded Thursday as a late drop erased the market’s gains from the day before. Companies that sell oil, gold and silver tumbled along with the prices of those commodities.
The Dow Jones industrial average sank 253.25 points, or 1.4 per cent, to 17,495.84.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 lost 31.18 points, or 1.5 per cent, to 2,041.89.
The Nasdaq composite index gave up 68.58 points, or 1.4 per cent, to 5,002.55.
For the week:
The Dow has gained 230.63 points, or 1.3 per cent.
The S&P has added 29.52 points, or 1.5 per cent.
The Nasdaq has risen 69.09 points, or 1.4 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 327.23 points, or 1.8 per cent.
The S&P is down 17.01 points, or 0.8 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 266.50 points, or 5.6 per cent.
