Stocks closed slightly lower in extremely light trading Thursday as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of Christmas. The price of crude oil continued to recover. U.S. markets will be closed Friday in observance of Christmas.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 50.44 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 17,552.17.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 3.30 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,060.99.
The Nasdaq composite rose 2.56 points, less than 0.1 per cent, to 5,048.49.
For the week:
The Dow was up 423.62 points, or 2.5 per cent.
The S&P 500 index was up 55.44 points, 2.8 per cent.
The Nasdaq was up 125.41 points, or 2.6 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 270.90 points, or 1.5 per cent.
The S&P is up 2.09 points, or 0.1 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 312.44 points, or 6.6 per cent.
