The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index notched all-time highs for the second day in a row Tuesday. The rally drove the Dow past the 18,000-points mark for the first time.
Investors welcomed a government report showing the U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 5 per cent in the third quarter of this year, the fastest pace in more than a decade.
On Tuesday:
The Dow gained 64.73 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 18,024.17.
The S&P 500 index added 3.63 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,082.17.
The Nasdaq composite lost 16 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 4,765.42.
For the week:
The Dow is up 219.37 points, or 1.2 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 11.52 points, or 0.6 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 0.05 points, less than 0.1 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,447.51 points, or 8.7 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 233.81 points, or 12.7 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 588.83 points, or 14.1 per cent.
