How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

U.S. stocks fell sharply on Tuesday, wiping out this year’s gains for the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 35.27 points, or 1.7 per cent, to 2,044.16.

The Nasdaq composite fell 82.64 points, or 1.7 per cent, to 4,859.79.

For the week:

The Dow is down 193.84 points, or 1.1 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is down 27.10 points, or 1.3 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 67.58 points, or 1.4 per cent.

For the year:
