U.S. stocks drifted mostly lower Tuesday, led by declines in energy stocks as the price of oil dropped for a fifth day in a row. The Dow Jones industrial average had its fourth straight gain.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 13.51 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 18,312.39.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 1.37 points, less than 0.1 per cent, to 2,127.83.
The Nasdaq composite dipped 8.41 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 5,070.03.
For the week:
The Dow is up 39.83 points, or 0.2 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 5.10 points, or 0.2 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 21.74, or 0.4 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 489.32 points, or 2.7 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 68.93 points, or 3.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 333.98 points, or 7.1 per cent.
